17 Jun Sending Video To Your Email Database Via MailChimp
If you’re wondering how to send or embed your promotional videos to your email database via MailChimp, Gmail or other email newsletter software, here’s a little info on how to go about it.
Some email services have made the process simple by allowing a fully integrated player box within the email program itself. Gmail and Outlook have already employed this technique, which makes sharing your video via email dead easy. All you need to do after you have written your email is insert the Youtube URL link, and your video will be able to be played automatically from the email platform, rather than being directed to your host site like Youtube.
Other services take a little more effort.
We’ve used MailChimp and Gmail as an example in the video below to show you how to add or embed video in an email newsletter, but many other popular EDM software works similarly. (Let us know if you’d like to see tutorial on a different email software in future ‘How To’ videos in this series.)
As of 2015, there are over 4.1 billion email accounts worldwide. 72% of consumers say that email is their preferred method of contact with companies, and statistics show that email conversion rates are 3 times higher than that of social media. With email marketing at an all time high, it is vital to remember to send your promotional video out to your
We’re using MailChimp to demonstrate how to send video to your email database, however the process will be similar with other servers. ( MailChimp is a free service, and is used by more than 8 million people and businesses around the world, sending over 600 million emails per day.)
There are a few different ways of incorporating video into your email. We’ll demonstrate two ways; via a video content block, or a video merge tag. Both of which share a thumbnail image of your video, overlayed with a player icon and progress bar to make it look like a video. The image is then linked with the videos URL so that when the reader clicks the image, they open a new window to watch the video.
Once you have opened and started a new campaign.. here are the steps to including your video:
SENDING VIDEO TO YOUR EMAIL DATABASE VIA MAILCHIMP
OPTION 1 – Using a video content block
Step 1: drag and drop the ‘video’ block into the top of the campaign where it says drop content blocks here.
Step 2: On the right, copy and paste your video’s URL. A preview image will automatically generate for videos from Youtube or Vimeo.
NOTE: If you are using another host such as Vzaar or BlipTV, you will need to upload an image by clicking browse and selecting the image you would like to use from your computer. (TIP: Take a screenshot of your video player box on your host site, so that the image looks as an actual video player.)
OPTION 2 – Using a Video Merge Tag
Step 1: Locate the basic format of the merge tag on the knowledge base article on Mailchimp’s website. Copy the tag
Step 2: Whilst building your campaign, click within a text space to open the editor on the right hand side of the screen. Paste the merge tag into the editor.
Step 3: Now we need to customise the tag for the video you are wanting to share. Where it says SERVICE, insert the video provider site name, for example Youtube or Vimeo.
Step 4: Go to your video’s URL and copy the video identifier, it differs slightly with each video provider, but it’s the unique collection of numbers and letters for your video, usually at the end of the address. Paste this into the merge tag to replace the XXXX’s.
Now that your video has been included as content in your email, continue with the rest of your campaign.
